Créé pour l’exposition artistique de Barbara Crane Navarro en octobre 2026, Shaman est le premier volet d’une série de cinq titres et films intitulée The Yanomami Project — un projet collaboratif mêlant musique originale, art visuel et images de la vie des Yanomami dans la forêt amazonienne.

Pendant douze ans, Barbara a passé plusieurs mois par an au sein de communautés Yanomami, au Venezuela et au Brésil. Une grande partie des images provient de films réalisés lors de ces séjours — par Barbara elle-même ou par les Yanomami — ainsi que d’éléments issus d’un film plus long qu’elle a achevé en 2000. Son travail a progressivement évolué : partant de peintures représentant la vie quotidienne — des femmes dans des hamacs avec leurs nourrissons, des chasseurs munis d’arcs et de flèches —, il s’est orienté vers une exploration des pratiques chamaniques Yanomami et des énergies qui relient la maison collective, la forêt, le ciel et le monde des esprits.

La musique originale réunit trois tambours à languettes en acier (RAV Vast), joués par Aniakea, et un tambour chamanique, joué par Zephyr. Superposés au sein d’une composition riche en résonances, ces quatre instruments créent un paysage sonore méditatif, où musique et images naviguent entre le quotidien des Yanomami, leurs savoirs ancestraux et la forêt vivante.

The Yanomami Project témoigne également d’un monde menacé. La déforestation, l’orpaillage illégal et d’autres activités extractives empoisonnent les cours d’eau, détruisent les forêts et mettent en péril des communautés autochtones dont le mode de vie et les connaissances sont indissociables de la forêt tropicale. Protéger la forêt amazonienne, c’est protéger les peuples qui en prennent soin depuis des générations. En fin de compte, c’est nous protéger tous.

Listen to and watch SHAMAN

Created for Barbara Crane Navarro’s October 2026 art exhibition, Shaman is the first of five titles and films in The Yanomami Project, a collaboration bringing together original music, art, and images of Yanomami life in the Amazon rainforest.

Barbara spent several months each year for twelve years living among Yanomami communities in Venezuela and Brazil. Much of the imagery comes from films made during those journeys by Barbara and by the Yanomami themselves, together with material from a longer film she completed in 2000. Her work gradually evolved from paintings of everyday life, women in hammocks with their babies and hunters carrying bows and arrows, towards an exploration of Yanomami shamanic practices and the energies connecting the communal house, the forest, the sky, and the spirit world.

The original music brings together three RAV Vast steel tongue drums played by Aniakea and a shamanic drum played by Zephyr. Layered into a single resonant composition, the four drums create a meditative, elemental soundscape in which music and images move between Yanomami daily life, ancestral knowledge, and the living forest.

The Yanomami Project also bears witness to a world under threat. Deforestation, illegal gold mining, and other extractive industries are poisoning rivers, destroying forests, and endangering Indigenous communities whose lives and knowledge are inseparable from the rainforest. Protecting the Amazon rainforest means protecting the people who have cared for it for generations. Ultimately, it means protecting all of us.
